Our Water

Water is very important to us human beings. Here in Mountain View, our water comes all the way from the Sierra Mountains. That's about 200 miles (120 kilometers) away! When the snow in the mountains melts in the spring, the water is first collected in big lakes called resevoirs and then transported to different places in California in wide canals.

After our town gets the water from the Sierras, we put it through a special filter so we can clean the water and drink it. When the water comes out of the filter it's clear because it doesn't have any dirt or bacteria in it. When the water is clean we can drink the healthy water. In our community, we all have running water in our homes. We can get water from the kitchen sink to wash our dishes or get a drink and in the bathroom to take a shower or wash our hands. Some of us can even get filtered water from our refridgerators. At school we can also drink water from the waterfountain.

Clean water is so important to humans. If you don't drink water you can get dehydrated and die. Sometimes you can get sick if the water you drink isn't clean. That's why we appreciate the water in our community! ~ Alec and Jenifer
