California's Natural Regions
California is a large state with many different natural regions, each beautiful in its own way. Starting at the very western edge of California is the Pacific coast. On the other side of the costal mountains is a large central valley. Continuing east, the Sierra Mountains rise high up into the sky. On the other side of the mountains you can often find interesting deserts.
The coast is a stretch of land that separates the mainland from the ocean. At the coast there are many fish, crabs and shells. During the summer you can sometimes see dolphins from the sandy beach. The California coast is over 800 miles ( ? kilometers) long. The coast holds many interesting things and is a great place to visit! - Sandra and Samantha
The central valley is a very big and beautiful place. It is a good place to grow crops because of its flat and fertile land. The central valley has a lot of farms, cows and horses. The farmers in the central valley produce most of our food. There are large fields of vegetables and many fruit orchards. They also plant beautiful plants and flowers like sunflowers, marigolds and poppies. In addition, to growing plants, there are also many animals farms. The farmers take the milk from the cows and the chickens from the eggs. The central valley is a very important place! - Adriana and Jennyfer
In the mountains there are many types of animals and plants. There are also lots of lakes and rivers. Often when you walk in the mountains you can see or hear an animal like a deer or a hawk. In the Sierra mountains there also live larger animals like mountain lions and bear. The Sierra Mountains are really tall. In the winter it snows there and some people like to go skiing. In the summer, though, the snow melts and people can go hiking and camping in the forests. - Jocelyn and Victor
Here in California one of the 4 major regions is the desert. In the desert there is very little water because it only rains a few times a year! The animals and plants living there have to be adapted to this kind of life. In the desert there are animals like lizards, scorpions, ants and snakes. There are also a lot of different kinds of cacti. Something interesting about the desert is that although it can be very hot in the day, it can get cold at night. - Sergio and Brayan
