Local Habitats

In Panabaj we live next to a large lake called Lago Atitlán. The lake is a brilliant blue and looks very beautiful. Because of this, our lake is visited by foreigners from all around the world. In the water you can find many animals that can be eaten like fish, crab and shrimp. There are a lot of people in our community that work as fishermen. They use wooden canoes and large fishing nets. ~ Maria Luisa

Our lake is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. The three volcanoes are called Volcán Atitlán, San Pedro and Tolimán. I like living near these volcanoes because when the sun comes out the landscape looks gorgeous. However, when it rains a lot there is always the possibility of mudslides that put our communities at risk. The mudslide on the 5th of October came from Volcán Tolimán. The mudslide swept away everything in its path. ~ José Lizandro

There are lots of trees in the mountains and volcanoes around our community. These trees provide us with fresh air and refreshing shade. This is important because sometimes it can get really hot. The trees also provide habitats for lots of birds. Some types of trees that we have here in Panabaj are pine, avocado, cyprus, jocote, cuxin and many more. It's important that we take care of our trees! ~ Julissa Milena

In our community of Panabaj there are many animals like deer, wildcats, snakes and lots of different types of birds. The mountain dove is one of my favorite birds because I love the way it sings. It often sings at midnight and at 5 o'clock in the morning. the quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala. It is green and red with a long tail. People like seeing quetzals, but they are difficult to find. ~ Maria
