Nicaraguan Art

Nicaragua has been a country particularly rich in literary and artistic expression. It would take a long time to discuss them all here, but poetry and painting deserve special mention. The greatest Nicaraguan poetry and prose writer to this day is Rubén Darío (1867-1916).   His works completely revolutionized Spanish Language poetry. Rubén Darío is known as the "prince of poetic writing in the Spanish language." He lived through many hard and sad times, but also had triumphs and successes. He was recognized the world over for his poetry and travelled to many countries in the world. There are many schools in our country named in honor of Rubén Darío, such as our own primary school in Pueblo Nuevo.

In the realm of precolumbian painting, the indigenous people of Nicaragua painted their caracteristic representations on wide and long pieces of deer hide. In recent times, Nicaraguan painting reached an exceptional artistic quality in the 1900's as painters had contact with paintings from around the world. Now Nicaraguan painters have shown surprising mastery and professionalism in their art. It is important to continue promoting art in order to have a cultural and artistic country.
