Traditional Foods
In Nicaragua we have many delicious traditional foods. The traditional food eaten most frequently is Gallo Pinto. Gallo Pinto is a mixture of fried rice and red beans. To make it, first you fry onion and sometimes garlic in oil and then you add the rice and beans into the pan. It's really yummy with cuajada, a cheese made from the fresh milk of local cows. One of the most popular traditional foods in Nicaragua is guirila. Güirila is like a tortilla, but made from fresh corn and cooked between banana leaves on the fire. Unlike the dried corn used to make regular tortillas, fresh corn is only available during each harvest season. It takes a long time to prepare. For these reasons, güirila is a very special food!
There are also many traditional drinks in Nicaragua made out of corn. The most popular of these is pinol. To make pinol first you toast the dried corn in the fire. Then you grind it to a fine powder and mix it with water. Finally, you add the amount of sugar that you want and it's ready to drink! ~ Eyrin Noel |
